“Can you believe her!?” I ranted, pacing the floor of Keristen’s hotel room. Dinner was going on downstairs, but I refused to attend. If I did, I would choke Chante out and end up in jail.

“I can.” She replied calmly. “She’s a guttersnipe. I wouldn’t expect anything less from her.”

“As if she knows a goddamn thing about me or my marriage!”

My hands shook violently as I paced. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been so upset, and I hated that Chante was the one to bring me to it.

“Fuck her, Quinn. She’s jealous of you, and you know it. Why even let her bring you down to her level?”

“‘Cause what if it’s all true?” My words came out a mumble as I sank to the ground. “First, some random woman reaches out to me and says Patrick’s cheating, and then Chante comes to me running off at the mouth, with too much goddamn confidence, about people gossiping about Patrick stepping out of our marriage. He can’t be cheating on me, can he?” I wanted her to tell me no. I needed my friend to ease my mind and tell me not to worry about gossip and rumors, but it wouldn’t happen. While I liked living in a dream, Keri was a sticker for reality.

“Quinn, I love you bu—”

“I know, K.” I cut her off, sniffling as the waterworks started. I was in denial, and I knew it. I’d been in denial. I couldn’t face the realization of what had been going on under my nose because then I would have to accept that my life was about to change, and I wasn’t ready for that. “How could I have not seen this coming?”

“Patrick is a charmer; he always has been.” She climbed off the bed and slid onto the floor beside me, wrapping me in her arms. “He puts up a front of what he wants people to see, and you’ve been with him for so long that he knows exactly how to work you.”

“What am I going to do?”

“Pick your head up, put that fucking crown on, and get through the rest of this weekend. And then, we’ll make your husband’s life a living hell. You’re a scorned woman without a prenup; remember that. Or whatever Miss Mamas in that Tyler Perry movie said.”

Giggling, I shook my head. “Shut up, K.”
